Aera employees share 2020’s silver linings

If you’ve doubted the year has yielded much good, think again

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, a struggling economy and a contentious election, 2020 has come with its own silver linings. Here, Aera employees share their positive take-aways from this extraordinary year:

Walter Strickland – Purchasing Agent, Bakersfield

“During difficult times, it’s easy to focus on personal matters. A better way through tough times is to focus on helping others. I’m proud to be part of a company that encourages community involvement. A host of avenues supported by many fine Aera employees comes to mind: The Jamison Center Christmas Toy Drive, Oil Can Do It, Adopt a Family, Boys and Girls Clubs of Bakersfield, Honor Flight and various school partnerships. By meeting the needs of others, you’ll benefit in ways you couldn’t have imagined.”

“2020 has been especially hard for many. I have four adopted children that my husband and I love deeply. When they came into my life, I was so young myself. The support of resources and others helped my family through that time. So, things like our annual food drive and providing for families in need are especially important and personal to me because I know what it’s like to need resources. Aera’s support for our community goes beyond profits. That type of care makes me proud to be an Aera employee.”

Orlando Lopez – Production Operator, Coalinga

“In all the gloom, there’s still good. As essential workers, we still have jobs. We all feel proud of what we do because oil and gas are extremely important to California. There are small things too. Some of us used to carpool from Lemoore to Coalinga, but we had to stop because of COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, our manager and supervisor have allowed us to drive our work trucks to and from work. We’re lucky to work for a company that truly cares about our safety and making our lives a little easier.”

Leading the Women of Aera employee resource group into a virtual environment has revealed how much Aera prioritizes the mental health of its employees. We have had overwhelming support from HR and management to host events connecting with and providing support to those struggling with remote work. Also, I appreciate Aera’s ability to quickly pivot to a changing price environment and launch numerous corporate initiatives in very short amount of time.”

Prentice Patterson – Process Specialist, San Ardo

“I think about COVID-19 all the time. It’s good to know that Aera is 100% protective of its employees. We are following every rule that comes out of Monterey County. Aera has all our personal protective equipment ready for us every day. Aera also keeps us informed with webinars at least every other week with a complete perspective of the company, oil prices, new projects and innovations, and what we need to do to keep the business in check. I  appreciate all the efforts Aera makes for us.”

“With all the challenges brought by 2020, the stress of balancing work and family has been consistently on my mind – especially that I am helping my wife and spending enough time with our two little boys. My teammates and leaders at Aera have all been greatly supportive of working flexible hours and distributing the workload. It shows Aera stands by its value of inspired people and makes me glad to be part of the Aera team.”

Lucas Paugh – Environmental Health & Safety Manager

“I am extremely grateful that Aera continues to deliver on its commitment to ‘Exceptional Care for People and the Environment.’ Not only are our employees and contractors going home alive and well every day, but we are also keeping jobs and the economy afloat in some very uncertain times, all while protecting the environment in which we live and thrive daily – an investment for our future.”
