Hands on oil

Kern County kids learn about careers in STEM at Kern Oil Festival

Kids got their hands on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities while learning about future career options at The Kern Oil Festival.

They drilled through layers of earth with hopes of finding oil. But in this case, their drills were straws pushing through layers of sand to capture plastic beads representing drops of oil. It’s a fun way Aera employees make it easier for kids to see how the company produces the oil and gas their clothes, toys and cellphones are made of.

The Kern Oil Festival is a daylong celebration of one of Kern County’s largest economic engines, hosted by the Kern Energy Foundation, and held at Stramler Park. It teaches thousands of Kern County residents about the positive impacts the oil industry has on local and state economies.
