Helping develop STEM students in Santa Barbara County

Aera Energy helped sponsor two educational programs in Santa Barbara County this summer:

  • “The work of these kids is impressive,” says Aera Energy Facilities Engineer Tiffany Chatman (at right), assisting students in the Summer Science Institute.

In the Summer Science Institute, 11 high school students from the Santa Maria area spent six weeks developing ideas for science fair projects.

Funded in part by Aera Energy, the institute has guided more than 100 students from Pioneer Valley, Righetti and Santa Maria high schools since it began in 2010.

Under the direction of science teacher Riccardo Magni, the students organize and complete individual research projects that not only prepare them for competition but also for future science studies. Five participants have gone on to receive top honors at the Santa Maria County Science Fair. Many have advanced to the state science fair.

  • Aera’s Paul Rogers discusses information technology and automation with elementary students during July’s STEM Industry Days of Northern Santa Barbara County.

During the STEM Industry Days of Northern Santa Barbara County, more than 200 students gathered at Robert Bruce Elementary School in Santa Maria to learn more about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Held July 25-26, the program helped give fifth- through eighth-graders the opportunity to meet STEM professionals and participate in hands-on, industry-led workshops and industry tours. Aera’s Paul Rogers provided students with a closer look at information technology and automation in the oil industry.
