Keeping reading relevant

Aera helps bring fun to local youth at Coalinga and Huron libraries this summer

More than 200 kids and their families are painting sidewalk art, watching puppet shows and getting up close and personal with small reptiles this summer at Coalinga and Huron libraries.

Several Saturday morning activities will be hosted at Coalinga and Huron branch libraries through their Summer Reading Program, thanks to a $3,000 donation from longtime community partner Aera Energy allowing the community to get reacquainted with its local libraries.

“Our partnership with Aera has enabled us get patrons back into our branches and really use the library,” said Hilda Crawford, circulation/outreach specialist at the Coalinga District Library. “It allows us to give gifts and provide fun activities to our community, so we’re not as constrained with our budget while juggling the need for some of our necessities such as ordering books.”

With the donation the library is able to give out free books to participants, buy materials for arts and crafts projects, and provide prizes to children and adults for reading during the summer. It also funds a series of special events at the branches on several Saturday afternoons.
