The kickoff for the annual Oil Can Do It food drive generated more than a ton of food donations, along with more than $3,600 in cash donations, to the Golden Empire Gleaners – one of Kern County’s largest food banks.
The annual event pits Aera, Chevron, California Resources Corp. (CRC) and API (note what it stands for) in a friendly competition to see which organization can raise the most food and money for the Gleaners. The kick-off event, which featured coverage from all three Kern County television stations, saw people stream into the CRC parking lot throughout the morning to drop off donations or purchase a $5 breakfast burrito, which also benefited the effort.
The goal this year is to provide 38,000 pounds of food to support the Gleaners’ work in Kern County. In 2017, the Gleaners provided food to 15,000 people per month and distributed more than 2 million pounds of food. The Oil Can Do It campaign will run through July 31 and the winner will be announced at an annual breakfast in August.
