Roses for cancer research

Aera’s The Love of a Cure (TLC) swaps roses for donations to benefit American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

Two of Aera’s employee-resource groups (ERGs) helped employees skip long lines and last-minute Valentine purchases, by offering free Valentine’s Day flower arrangements in exchange for donations to benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Aera Asian American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) and the Aera Latino Employee Network (ALEN) hosted its third annual The Love of a Cure (TLC) to kick off a series of events to support Team Aera’s Relay for Life (RFL) fundraising efforts. ERG volunteers assembled and distributed about 70 flower arrangements to employees in exchange for more than $3,000 in donations.

“We look forward to TLC every year because it gives ERG members different ways to give back to our community, whether through monetary support as a donor or personal time as a volunteer,” said Patrick Tsang, Aera project manager and AAERG member. “Besides fostering teamwork, ERG volunteers get to engage with colleagues through a fun volunteer activity that raises money for a really great cause!”

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life directly supports breakthrough research, 24/7 support for cancer patients, access to lifesaving screenings, and much more, according to the ACS website. Every year, Team Aera raises anywhere from $50,000 to $80,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society through various events and fundraisers throughout the year.

“Cancer has impacted the lives of friends and family members of Aera employees and within Bakersfield’s community,” said Jean Browning, Aera financial analyst who is this year’s Team Aera lead. “Aera has supported this event for more than 25 years because it’s committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of employees and members of the communities where we live and work. Raising awareness for the prevention of cancer fits right into our values.”

Aera has contributed more than $1 million to support ACS’ RFL over the last 25 years.
