Local oil companies compete to help Golden Empire Gleaners alleviate hunger in Kern County
“Oil Can Do It,” the annual and friendly food-drive competition among Kern County oil companies, is seeking donations from fellow employees and the community through Aug. 31.
Aera Energy, California Resources Corp., Chevron USA and Energy API are partnering to raise funds to help Bakersfield-based Golden Empire Gleaners restock its shelves emptied during the COVID-19 crisis.
Chevron won last year’s food drive. Aera, which raised the equivalent of 52,167 pounds of food last year, is hoping to claim the title in 2020.
“Although we have never won this competition, our employees have led this campaign and have always been extremely generous in helping alleviate hunger in Kern County,” said Aera Public Affairs representative Jamie Swetalla. “That makes the friendly competition a win-win for the people struggling to put food on the table right now.”
Local residents are encouraged to make online contributions here. If you want to drop off shelf-friendly food items, call the Gleaners at (661) 324-CROP.
The Gleaners is a Kern County nonprofit that collects and distributes food to those in need.
